2010 Scenario:
The Department of Basic Education has launched a competition for the Grade 12 IT learners to develop educational software (software designed to facilitate teaching and learning) to be used to teach a concept or a skill in South African schools.
For the purpose of this competition the educational software must be aimed at any concept or content of the eight learning areas for Grades R – 9 or any of the 29 recognised subjects for Grades 10 – 12.
You may choose your own topic or focus area within the context of the given scenario.

Examples of possible educational programs to choose from:
- Drill and practice exercises such as for spelling or mathematical concepts
- Simulating a science experiment
- Testing content knowledge, etc.

Identify an area in one of the learning areas or subjects and develop a software solution that teachers could use to teach certain concepts or content or that learners could use to learn, practise or drill certain content or concepts. The software could also encourage competitions based on subject content between learners or schools.

The program must interact with a database and use a GUI to interact with the user. Either Java or Delphi can be used as a programming language. In addition to the program, you must also compile a technical manual and a user guide for the program.

Grade 11

2010 Scenario:
A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.
In general, social networking services allow users to create a profile for themselves and keep track of a set of people and the relationships between them.

Users can upload a picture of themselves, create their 'profile' and can often be "friends" with other users. In most social networking services, both users must confirm that they are friends before they are linked. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network_service)

You are required to create an application in Java/Delphi to immitate a simple version of a social website such as Facebook.

Your program could include the following:
- User profiles to be added or deleted or to be looked up
- For each profile you might want to keep track of the person’s name associated with that profile, an optional image and/or current status that a person may wish to display with his/her profile and a list of friends, etc.

Grade 10

2010 Scenario:
Using calculators or converters is a convenient way in which one can do calculations for specialised tasks or conversions accurately and effectively.

Grade 10 learners are requested to write a program in Java/Delphi that will simulate such a calculator to do calculations or conversions for specific tasks.

Examples of possible types of calculations or conversions:
- Currency conversions
- Conversions between different measurement systems such as the International System (SI), English Customary System, Metric System
- Conversions between European numbers/digits and Roman or Aracbic numbers
- Calculator that could teach youngsters certain concpets such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.
- Calculators that performs calculations to assist office workers to easily and accurately calculate specific routine calculations such area, volume, interest rates, etc.
